The child dental benefits scheme (CDBS) is a Medicare based scheme that provides financial assistance for a number of basic dental treatment. The scheme allows for $1026 every 2 years, for eligible children (2022-2023).
The scheme is aimed towards low- to middle-income families who might also receive at least one of a number of Government supports, for a number of specific dental services for children 0-17.
CDBS dental benefits program was introduced by the Commonwealth of Australia government in January 2014. The dental benefits schedule cdbs is available for all individuals who receive any one of a number of individual benefits. Payments are provided by Services Australia.
Child Dental Benefits Schedule requires that children are only eligible if they are:
- eligible for Medicare (Medicare online account preferred)
- under 18 years of age
In addition, a child or carer must be receiving one or more of the following Government benefits:
- Carer payment
- Youth allowance
- Receive Family Tax Benefit Part A
- Disability support pension
- Parenting payment
- ABStudy
- Veteran’s children (16-17 year olds only)
- Special Benefit
Includes basic dental services
Services that eligible children can receive include:
- Up to 2 check-ups with at least one oral examination each
- 2 fluoride treatments per year if required
- X-rays or imaging where clinically indicated
- Basic dental care, including scaling and polishing. This might be provided by an oral hygienist, dentist or other dental professional.
- Basic dental care for children 0-17 years
- Regular dental examinations
- Fillings
- Cleanings
- Fissure sealants
- Tooth extraction
- Root canal treatments
All other more advanced services will need to be covered by a person’s private health insurance. What is not covered by the CDBS includes:
- Prosthodontics (replacing teeth with dentures, crowns or bridges)
- Orthodontic treatment (braces or Invisalign)
- Cosmetic dental work such as tooth whitening and veneers.
- Treatments that require hospital admission
- Any treatment that has already been claimed through private health insurance
